The Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) reports that they will deploy Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) equipment for construction activities on I-95 in Cecil County.

Beginning Wednesday, July 10th, ASE equipment will be deployed on both northbound and southbound of I-95 at Belvidere Road Interchange. This equipment will be used to slow drivers in the work zones currently in place on this stretch of I-95. Advance warning signs are in place prior to the work zone to alert drivers of automated speed enforcement use and a “speed trailer” will be on-site to display drivers’ speeds. By law, if a vehicle is recorded traveling at or above a specified rate over the posted speed limit (the posted speed is 65 mph at this location), a Civil Penalty of $80.00 will be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, for the remainder of 2024. Starting 2025, a tiered Civil Penalty system will be implemented, with a maximum penalty of $1,000.00.

Maryland SafeZones’ goal is to slow drivers and make work zones safer environments for work crews, drivers and passengers. Even when workers are not present, work zones can be dangerous due to uneven pavement, lane shifts, reduced shoulders and other modifications. As of January 1, 2025, the Civil Penalty is doubled for violations when workers are present. This measure underscores the critical safety message and is regarded as a positive step by the ASE program. By increasing the penalties, the program aims to enhance driver compliance and further protect the lives of those working on and traveling through Maryland’s roadways.
