The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District is prepared to address any potential winter weather impacts expected to begin Sunday evening into Monday.
On Friday, January 3, crews will begin pretreating all interstates and major primary and secondary routes in the 14-county Richmond District. Roadways are treated with a salt- water brine solution to delay the bond of snow or ice to the pavement. Mobile operations require that brining vehicles travel at 35 miles per hour to ensure the brine solution is absorbed by the roadway. Drivers should give crews plenty of space and treat them as emergency response vehicles.
Richmond District has over 1,400 pieces of equipment, including trucks, plows, and motor graders at its disposal to address road impacts during and after winter weather events.
VDOT urges travelers to avoid non-essential travel during severe weather. Those who must travel should use extreme caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time for their commute.
