The New Jersey Turnpike Authority reports that two Turnpike service areas are closing this month for major renovations and will remain closed until May 2022 as the next phase of the service area improvement program gets underway.
The Woodrow Wilson Service Area on the northbound Turnpike between interchanges 7 and 7A closed last week.
The Molly Pitcher Service Area on the southbound Turnpike between interchanges 8A and 8 is scheduled to close this week.
There will be no food, fuel or other services available at either service area while construction is underway and no public access to the parking lots.
The improvements at Woodrow Wilson and Molly Pitcher are the next phase in the $250 million service area improvement program announced by the Turnpike Authority in 2017. The Turnpike Authority’s service area contractors agreed to pay for the improvements in exchange for 25-year contracts to operate the food and fuel concessions on the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. Because of that investment, most of the service area facilities are being replaced or remodeled without the use of toll-payer dollars.
The service area contractors are Applegreen, which provides food services, and Sunoco, which provides fuel services.
Improvements have already been made at Richard Stockton, Thomas Edison, Alexander Hamilton, and Vince Lombardi on the Turnpike, and Forked River, Monmouth, and Brookdale North on the Parkway.
With the completion of the work at Molly Pitcher and Woodrow Wilson next year, more than half of the service areas on the Turnpike and Parkway will have been replaced or significantly renovated since 2014. Four additional service areas are scheduled to be replaced and three remodeled in the coming years.
While Woodrow Wilson is closed, the closest options on the Turnpike for northbound drivers for food and fuel are the James Fenimore Cooper Service Area, which is 20 miles south at milepost 39.4, and the Joyce Kilmer Service Area, which is about 19 miles north at milepost 78.7.
While Molly Pitcher is closed, the closest options for food and fuel on the Turnpike for southbound drivers are the Thomas Edison Service Area, which is about 14 miles to north at milepost 78.7, and the Richard Stockton Service Area, which is 13 miles south at milepost 58.7.
