The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reports that Interstate 95 in Philadelphia is closed following a tanker truck fire that caused an I-95 bridge to collapse Sunday morning. The highway (both northbound and southbound) is likely to remain closed for an extended period of time.
The bridge carrying I-95 northbound lanes over the Cottman Avenue ramp has collapsed, and the bridge carrying southbound traffic has been “compromised” and is closed for safety reasons.
As a result, Interstate 95 is closed between the Aramingo Avenue/Betsy Ross Bridge (Exit 26) and Academy Road/Linden Avenue (Exit 32), according to PennDOT.
Recommended I-95 Detours:
If you are traveling between Delaware and New Your City, you probably already use the New Jersey Turnpike or New Jersey’s I-295. If that’s the case, the Philadelphia closure will not impact your trip.
For local traffic, however, PennDOT is advising the following detour:
- I-95 Southbound Travelers: Take I-95 to the exit at Route 63 West (Woodhaven Road), then to U.S. Route 1 South, then to I-76 East to I-676 East, and back to I-95.
- I-95 Northbound Travelers: Take I-95 to the exit at I-676 West, then to I-76 West, to U.S. 1 North, then to Route 63 East (Woodhaven Road), and back to I-95.
The above closures and detours may change as this event unfolds. We recommend that you visit the I-95 Exit Guide website for updates. Additionally, for Real-Time I-95 Traffic and Construction information, visit Philadelphia I-95 Traffic.
