This past weekend, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) opened a second lane at the beginning of the I-95 North Viaduct service road where it exits from I-95 North, just after the Downtown exit in Providence. Early next month, they plan to open an additional lane on the right side of the service road prior to the Smith Street overpass and the State Offices exit. Learn more here.

Motorists can anticipate alternating lane closures for survey work on Route 1 (Elmwood Avenue), from McKinley Street to the Route 10 North on-ramp, Sunday night from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. We’ll also have daytime steel repairs prompting a right shoulder closure within the project limits on Route 1 (Elmwood Avenue) South under I-95, weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

A new traffic pattern is in place. This past weekend, RIDOT opened a second lane at the beginning of the service road where it exits from I-95 North, just after the Downtown exit. The far-left lane continues on I-95 as an express lane only, with the right lane as an exit only lane to the service road. The center lane is now an option lane, meaning travelers can choose to use it as an express lane or as an exit onto the service road as a second exit lane.

Next week, bridge demolition will require the closures of the on-ramps from Memorial Boulevard and Route 10 North to I-95 North, Sunday-Thursday nights from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and Providence Place, from Harris Avenue to Park Street, and Promenade Street, from Park Street to Holden Street, Sunday-Thursday nights from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Please follow signed detours. Motorists can also expect alternating lane closures or short-term rolling roadblocks for overhead sign installation on I-95 North, from Exit 36B (Point Street) to Exit 39A (Branch Avenue), Sunday-Thursday nights from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

All of this work is part of our ongoing effort to have a high level of maintenance on this bridge. We are doing work proactively to provide a positive measure of safety.
