On Friday, December 8, at 5:00 a.m., the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will reach a major construction milestone when I-95 southbound traffic shifts to the new southbound Whittier Bridge span.

The contractor will realign southbound traffic on I-95 south between Route 110 in Amesbury and the Pine Hill Road/Ferry Road Bridge in Newburyport.

Northbound traffic will then be shifted to the west side of the northbound Whittier Bridge span in late December 2017 to create a safe work zone to construct the Shared-Use Path from Pine Hill Road to Route 110. A future email advisory will be distributed to notify the traveling public when that shift is scheduled to occur.

During these transitions three travel lanes will continue to be maintained in both directions. The Whittier Bridge/I-95 reconstruction project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2018 with a total construction cost of $317 Million.

MassDOT encourages drivers traveling through the area to reduce speed and use caution, and expect delays.

This following photograph shows northbound direction of travel on the left of the bridge and southbound direction of travel on the right with MassDOT crews preparing logistics for Friday’s traffic shift.
