The Maine Turnpike Authority reports that beginning at 8:00 PM on Tuesday evening, July 23, the Exit 45 (Maine Mall Road) southbound off-ramp will be closed overnight for Turnpike maintenance crews to install traffic control barriers needed to avoid sections of the bridge that were damaged on July 15. Crews will install barriers and restripe the lanes to improve maintenance of traffic adjacent to the damaged bridge girder.
The ramp will be closed from approximately 8:00 PM on Tuesday evening until 5:00 AM Wednesday morning, July 24. During the closure, motorists may use Exit 46 (Jetport) or Exit 42 (Scarborough) as appropriate alternatives.
This work is required because the bridge was struck by an overheight vehicle on July 15 resulting in damage to one girder. Since the hit, MTA engineers have determined that the bridge is safe for passage if vehicles are kept away from the area over the damaged girder.
Engineers are still determining what other steps may be appropriate. The bridge is scheduled to be completely replaced in 2021.
