The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reports that brief overnight traffic stops on Interstate 95 northbound and southbound in Spotsylvania County are scheduled next week as crews begin to place the final set of beams needed to build the new Route 17 (Mills Drive) overpass across the interstate.
Drivers can expect lane closures and intermittent full traffic stops near mile markers 124-125 in Spotsylvania, and on Mills Drive, at the following dates and times:
Monday, August 7 – Thursday, August 10 (ending early Friday, Aug. 11)
Interstate 95 Northbound
- 9:00 p.m. – Single lane closed
- 10:00 p.m. – Two lanes closed
- 11:30 p.m. – 3:30 a.m. – Full, intermittent traffic stops for up to 30 minute intervals
- 4:30 a.m. – All northbound lanes open
Route 17 (Mills Drive)
Glenwood Drive/Overview Drive to Latitude Street (shopping center entrance)
- 11:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m. – One-way, alternating traffic crossing the Route 17 overpass. Full intermittent traffic stops for up to 15 minute intervals during beam placement. Traffic will be directed through the work zone by a flagging crew.
Thursday, August 10 – Friday, August 11
Interstate 95 Southbound
- 9:00 p.m. – Single lane closed

When construction on this $23.5 million project is finished in February 2024, Route 17 will be expanded to four travel lanes from Latitude Street to just east of the Hospital Boulevard and Germanna Point Drive intersection.
The new interstate overpass will have four travel lanes. A shared-use path for pedestrians will be built along the southern side of Route 17 and sidewalk will be built along the northern side of Route 17. Pedestrian crossing equipment and crosswalks will be added at intersection crossing locations.
