Lane restrictions will be in place at night on northbound and southbound Interstate 95 between the Interstate 676 and Allegheny Avenue interchanges in Philadelphia as crews continue the setup of a new traffic pattern for the $311.6 million southbound reconstruction at the Girard Avenue Interchange that is scheduled to begin in early October, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced.
The schedule is:
- Monday, September 24, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, northbound I-95 will be reduced from four lanes-to-three between the I-676 and Girard Avenue interchanges for barrier placement;
- Monday, September 24, through Wednesday, September 26, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, southbound I-95 will be reduced from four lanes-to-two between the Girard Avenue and I-676 interchanges for barrier placement;
- Wednesday, September 26, from 1:00 AM to 3:00 AM, northbound I-95 will be reduced from four lanes-to-one and intermittent brief stoppages will occur between the Girard Avenue and Allegheny Avenue interchanges for joint sealing on the new concrete pavement; and
- Thursday, September 27, and Friday, September 28, from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, southbound I-95 will be reduced from four lanes-to-three between the Allegheny Avenue and Girard Avenue interchanges for barrier placement and installation of traffic monitoring equipment.
The traffic shift is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of October 5-6, with demolition of the southbound viaduct set to begin immediately after the traffic shift.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling on I-95 through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled operation is weather dependent.
