MassDOT has announced that I-95 construction will detour northbound and southbound traffic off I-95/Route 128 in Needham this coming weekend, beginning in the evening on Friday, November 4, and ending by the early morning of Monday, November 7.

These detours are necessary for the demolition of the “old” Highland Avenue Bridge over I-95/Route 128 as part of the Add-A-Lane project.

I-95 construction demolition operations will first occur on the east side of the bridge (over I-95 Northbound), from Friday evening, to Saturday afternoon. This will be followed by work on the west side of the bridge (over I-95 Southbound), from Saturday evening, to early Monday morning. At present it is anticipated that there will be a period of time on Saturday afternoon when both I-95 North and Southbound are detoured.

During the I-95 construction demolition operations, highway vehicles will be detoured off I-95/Route 128 and will use the two lanes of travel on off-ramps. They will then cross over Highland Avenue and then get back onto the highway. Because Highland Avenue at this demolition area will be closed to local traffic, vehicles coming from I-95/Route 128 will not have to stop at the traffic lights which on a normal day are active.

Appropriate signage and police details will be present to guide traffic to the detoured routes.

MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays. Those traveling through the area should expect delays and traffic impacts, reduce speed, and use caution.

Detailed information and diagrams on detour routes are as follows:

I-95 Northbound Detour

Northbound traffic will:

  • Exit I-95 at Highland Avenue, exit 19A
  • Cross Highland Avenue and connect to the northbound on-ramp via a temporary paved connection.
  • Reenter I-95 via the northbound on-ramp.
  • Southbound traffic will operate normally.

The temporary connection via the ramps will operate as a free-flow condition without signalization.

I-95 Southbound Detour

Southbound traffic will:

  • Exit I-95 at Highland Avenue, exit 19B
  • Cross Highland Avenue and connect to the southbound on-ramp via a temporary paved connection.
  • Reenter I-95 via the southbound on-ramp.
  • Northbound traffic will operate normally.

The temporary connection via the ramps will operate as a free-flow condition without signalization.

Motorists should exercise caution and allow additional time for their trip during demolition operations. While the temporary connections via the ramps will be safe, they will not support mainline operational speeds and drivers should expect to slow down.
