Expect Major Delays as I-95 Construction Heats Up in Fredericksburg

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports that, similar to temperatures in the Fredericksburg area, the number of work zones on Interstate 95 is also rising. Drivers should anticipate major overnight delays on I-95 this week, with multiple work zones requiring double lane closures, including full traffic stops on I-95 southbound scheduled at Exit 118/Thornburg.

I-95 Construction Southbound

  • Prince William County line to Mile Marker 145 at Aquia Creek Bridge
    • Thru Thursday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m. Crews will be paving I-95 southbound between the the Prince William County line and mile marker 146.6.
  • Mile Marker 145 at Aquia Creek Bridge
    • Thru Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. Double lane closures will end at 4:30 a.m. A single lane will remain closed until 7 a.m. except on Friday, when all lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. On Friday evening, a single lane will close at 10 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at midnight. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Saturday. The bridge is located at mile marker 145, just before Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville). Crews are working to improve the bridge condition as part of a bridge rehabilitation project.
  • Exit 130 (Route 3) City of Fredericksburg
    • Thru Thursday: The I-95 southbound off-ramp to Route 3 westbound will be reduced to a single lane beginning at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. During the same hours, one of the right turn lanes at the traffic signal to westbound Route 3 will be blocked for paving work . The work is connected to the I-95 Safety Improvements Project at the Exit 130 interchange.
  • Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road) FULL TRAFFIC STOP
    • Monday: Expect a single lane to be closed at 9:30 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. Between midnight and 5 a.m., all southbound traffic will be detoured to the exit ramp, directed across Mudd Tavern Road, and guided onto the entrance ramp to the interstate. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control.

  • Exit 130 (Route 3) City of Fredericksburg
    • Tuesday – Thursday: Expect a single lane closure to begin at 9 p.m. on I-95 northbound to allow crews to remove temporary lane markings. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.
  • Mile Marker 145 at Aquia Creek Bridge
    • Thru Friday: A single lane will close at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. the following morning. The bridge is located at mile marker 145, just north of Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville).
