The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the Interstate 95 southbound off-ramp at the Exit 126 interchange in Spotsylvania County for preliminary construction activities ahead of the ramp, Route 1 southbound widening and Southpoint Parkway safety improvement project.

Starting at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, crews will close the I-95 southbound off-ramp to Route 1 until 2:00 a.m. Thursday, November 17.

Drivers seeking Route 1 can either choose to access exit 133 (Route 17) in Stafford County or exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg depending on their destination.

Message boards will be posted next week to warn motorists to the ramp closure.

Crews need to close the ramp to safely complete tree clearing ahead of project construction to build right turn lanes on the I-95 southbound exit 126 off-ramp to Route 1 southbound.  The right turn lanes will add capacity for traffic to turn onto Southpoint Parkway.

The additional turn lanes will reduce congestion for traffic exiting I-95 and along the Route 1 corridor.

As part of the safety improvement project, traffic islands will also be added to Southpoint Parkway to restrict through and left-turning traffic from the side street movements. An additional right-turn lane will be added to the eastbound approach of Southpoint Parkway to Route 1.

Construction on the nearly $16 million project will begin early 2023 and anticipated to be complete in August 2025.
