The Maine Turnpike Authority reports that traffic stoppages on the Turnpike mainline in Portland are anticipated to begin this week for blasting. The blasting is necessary to remove ledge for the Portland Area Widening project. The blasting will occur between the hours of 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, Monday through Thursday. There could be up to two blasts per day. Each blast is anticipated to stop traffic for up to five minutes at a time.
During each blast, traffic will be stopped in both directions in the area near the Portland/Westbrook Interchange (Exit 48) on the Turnpike mainline. Traffic will also be stopped on the Brighton Avenue Bridge over the turnpike in Portland during the blasts. The blasting is expected to occur for approximately two weeks.
All work is weather dependent. Motorists should prepare for delays during the timeframe stoppages are scheduled to occur. Construction signs and portable electronic message boards will be in place to inform approaching travelers of the stoppages, and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) broadcasts on 1610 AM will also be used to inform drivers. The Maine Turnpike Authority appreciates motorists’ patience during this construction.
