The North Carolina Department of Transportation reports that work is under way on Interstate 95 southbound near Smithfield to repair roadway damage caused by a vehicle fire that took place during a multiple crash sequence on Wednesday afternoon. Both directions of I-95 were closed for more than 12 hours until the northbound lanes reopened early this morning.
Transportation officials hope to open the southbound lanes later today.
A very short detour is in place to get around the work, with vehicles exiting at U.S. 70 Business (exit 95), crossing the highway and going down the on-ramp to return to I-95. To help with congestion, U.S. 70 Business is closed in both directions so detouring traffic doesn’t have to stop when crossing that highway. And to help keep traffic away from that area, the I-95 North exit ramp for U.S. 70 Business is closed.
