About Roger Williams Park Zoo

One of our nation’s oldest zoos (opened in 1872), Roger Williams Park Zoo is an integral part of southern New England’s history and heritage, bringing excitement and discovery of the natural world to generations of visitors. Today the Zoo is one of Rhode Island’s top tourist attractions, welcoming over 650,000 people annually from all over New England and beyond.

Situated within Providence’s historic and beautiful Roger Williams Park, the Zoo is home to well over 100 species of rare and fascinating animals from all over the world. As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Zoo is also home to many endangered species and participates in cooperative conservation and breeding programs to help ensure their future survival.

Major Exhibits

• The Alex and Ani Farmyard – Live like a local farmer. The Alex and Ani Farmyard replicates the layout of a typical Rhode Island commercial farm, but also represents both urban and community farms.
• The Fabric of Africa – Go “on safari” and find rare and exotic species. Learn how the people, land and animals of Africa are all interconnected while watching zebras, wildebeests, aoudads, wild dogs and more in action.
• Feinstein Junior Scholar Wetlands Trail – Observe Native Wildlife in Rhode Island’s Most Endangered Habitat. Relax, unwind and enjoy nature on this beautiful ¼ mile walking path through Rhode Island’s most endangered habitat, the wetlands.
• Hasbro’s Our Big Backyard – Hasbro’s Our Big Backyard is a new kind of nature play and exploration area for children and their families.
• Marco Polo’s Adventure Trek – Follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo and see some of the animals that Marco Polo may have encountered in his travels including camels, moon bears, snow leopards, red crowned cranes, and red pandas.
• North America – Discover some of the most amazing creatures that call our continent home. See how harbor seals swim, marvel at the majestic bald eagle, watch bison graze, see if you can spot the red wolf, peer at the playful river otter and more!
• Tropical America – Featuring Rhode Island’s only “rainforest” with a lush atmosphere, in the Tropical America exhibits you’ll come face to face with monkeys, tamarins, flamingoes; bats; an anaconda, one of nature’s most unusual creatures; the giant anteater.
• World of Adaptations – Follow the field notes of biologists and discover the land down under and beyond with an exhibit featuring the unique wildlife that have developed adaptations to survive.
