Light snow fell across the state of Virginia last night, with a second storm expected to bring heavy snowfall for central and southeastern Virginia, including I-95, beginning late Friday and lasting through Saturday morning. Heaviest accumulations are expected in the Hampton Roads region, which will make for hazardous driving conditions.
VDOT crews and contractors got a jumpstart on treating roads today by spreading salt and other materials to help prevent icing. Regardless of treatment, once snow falls, road surfaces will be slick.
Crews are fully prepared with equipment, fuel and materials. Traffic Operations Centers monitor road conditions and direct resources.
When the storm hits, crews work to clear interstates and primary roads first, then major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities, and then other secondary roads and subdivision streets. Crews focus their efforts on those roads that carry the most traffic.
I-95 travelers should monitor weather conditions and be prepared. Do not drive on snow and ice-covered roads particularly when the second storm hits this weekend with heavy snow expected from Richmond to Virginia Beach. Heavy snowfall is expected Friday night and will continue through Saturday morning, making for slick roads through the weekend and into part of next week because of freezing temperatures.
