The Virginia Department of Transportation reports that overnight lane and ramp closures are scheduled this week on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area, as part of major construction activity planned during March for several “Improve 95” construction program projects.

Travelers may encounter significant travel delays on I-95 when lane closures are in place.

This week, crews will begin work required to open all I-95 southbound lanes near the exit 130 (Route 3) interchange in Fredericksburg. Southbound traffic will be shifted into its final configuration as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing Project. Overnight, double lane closures will be needed next week in the local and through travel lanes on I-95 southbound in this area.

Additionally, the entrance ramp to I-95 southbound from Route 3 eastbound in Fredericksburg will closed overnight on several evenings this week. Drivers will be detoured to U-turn at Gateway Boulevard and proceed to Route 3 westbound to enter I-95 southbound.

In Stafford County, construction continues on the 10-mile extension of 95 Express Lanes in the median of I-95, and double lane closures are scheduled for this project.

Road Work Ahead: I-95 South Closure and Detour Set for March 7-11

Looking further ahead in March, travelers can expect major delays overnight on I-95 southbound near exit 136/Centreport Parkway in Stafford starting late Monday, March 7 through early Friday, March 11.

Crews with the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project will close all southbound lanes and detour southbound traffic to Route 1 overnight between 11:30 p.m. until 3:00 a.m.

The interstate closure and detour is necessary to safely allow crews to place bridge beams for the future flyover at the new access point being built at exit 133 (Route 17).

Work is underway to extend the express lanes by 10 miles from south of exit 143 (Route 610) to exit 133, along with construction of three new access points at exit 148 (Quantico), exit 140 (Courthouse Road) and exit 133.

Signs and police will direct drivers along the recommended detour route from I-95 to Route 1 south to Route 17 back to I-95 south.

The Express Lanes will remain open during this work zone with usual operating schedule.
